This week's Thursday Movie Picks is The Stage

---

I thought this week was the last week of the month and was preparing a list of TV shows to pick, but nope, this month is a 5 week month, so it's still a movie pick and it's The Stage.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
I've picked this a few times before for other themes because I love love this movie! Set in the late 19th century it's a musical about a writer and courtesan falling in love at the Moulin Rouge as they work on a musical together.

Anna Karenina (2012)
I didn't love the movie, but I appreciated the way it was presented which was like a stage play. Most of the scenes take place indoors in like a theater, making full use of it so we'd see the actors act on the stage as well as the auditorium area. Doors would open to a new area of the theater or props would move around to introduce a new scene and setting; it's pretty amazing to look at, how the story flows from one scene to the next.

Black Swan (2010)
I've never seen an actual ballet performances before so I have nothing to compare it to, but I thought the Swan Lake scenes the short one at the start and the one at the end was just so beautiful. In the middle of that we follow Nina, the lead ballerina as she struggles with her sanity where her own life becomes a sort of manifestation of Swan Lake.

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
I didn't love it the first time I saw it, however the second time I sort of do. They probably could have gone with an actor with a more stronger commanding voice for the Phantom, but Gerard Butler wasn't bad, certainly not like Russell Crowe in Les Misérables. My favourite scene is probably the masquerade where they had this gorgeous lavish sequence of finely dressed people all dancing.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Rescue

---

This week's theme is Rescue. Hard week for picks today, so I'm just gonna do a quick one.

San Andreas (2015)
After an earthquake, a rescue helicopter pilot, played by Dwayne Johnson, makes a journey to search and rescue his daughter. This movie was just a super dumb disaster movie. Skip it.

Captain Phillips (2013)
It's about a cargo ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates, with Tom Hanks in the title role. If I remember correctly, most of the movie it was mostly of the captain and crew trying to survive the hijacking...the rescue bits came only near the end. Overall an interesting, although not really a memorable movie for me.

The Perfect Storm (2000)
I saw this again recently. I think it's a decent disaster movie and the storm was scary. I pretty much had forgotten that this came out way before the Deadliest Catch series, so the typical fisherman's day at sea haven't really been seen by most; how dangerous it can be even without a storm. Anyway, I was fascinated that rescue helicopters actually go out in such volatile storms, I would have thought helicopters were worst off at weathering it than the stranded ships.

Thursday Movie Picks #161: Summer Blockbusters

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Summer Blockbusters

---

This week's theme is a suggestion by Mettel Ray. My favorite genre is drama, summer blockbusters most of them are definitely not. But here are some blockbusters I have enjoyed in the past.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
I definitely did not see this when it came out, while I have always been aware of it, I only saw it about a decade ago. It's such an adorable, sweet and heartwarming movie, it's hard to not fall in love with it. It's been referenced so much over the years, if you haven't seen this, get to it.

X-Men (2000)
I've not read a single, X-men comic (you can't get comics at newsstands here, you'd have to go to a comic book store and most are just so out of the way) so long story short my introduction to most comic book stories were through the cartoon series and I love the 90s X-Men series. When this movie was released I was so excited to see it and was so happy that it turned out well.

Spider-Man (2002) / Spider-Man 2 (2004)
I grew up watching the 90s Spider-Man series and seeing these Spider-Man movies were incredible. They were so fun, had good villains and Spider-Man swinging from building to building, who would have thought they could have actually put it on screen.

Thursday Movie Picks #160: Crime Family

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Crime Family

---

I don't watch a lot of gangster movies, which are often about crime families, so my pool of movies to pick from are very limited.

Animal Kingdom (2010)
I've picked this before for other themes. Anyway...the gist: when a teen boy's mom dies, his only choice other than being homeless is to move in with his grandma and uncles, the very people that his mom had tried keep him away from when she was alive. Such a great movie. It has also been made into a TV series recently, which changed the setting from Australia to the US. I've seen the first season and I think it's good.

Road to Perdition (2002)
Another favourite which I have often pick. It's about two sets of fathers and sons, their life of crime and the complications it brings to their relationships.

The Newton Boys (1998)
I really don't remember much about this other than I had found it entertaining and they're brothers so it fits the theme.
